GDPR? Data privacy? Understand your risks and how to de-risk your organization

Data Protection Regulation

The General Data Protection Regulation is legislation enacted by the European Union to protect the data privacy rights of its citizens. As a regulation in EU law, it came into effect in all member states immediately upon enactment in May 2018. The EU regulation impacts all organizations, anywhere in the world, that employ EU citizens or have EU citizens as customers or other data subjects. Already, US businesses outside of the EU area are falling afoul of the heightened consequences of not complying with data protection regulations. Google recently was fined $44 million, Facebook $5 billion and Marriott $123 million.

Data Privacy

Getting data privacy right starts by taking it seriously. To manage data privacy, organizations must first develop a detailed understanding of: how they gain permission from data subjects to store and process their data, what privacy data they hold, where it is physically located, why they hold it, who can access it, and who processes it. While this all sounds simple, it’s complicated by the use of hard-copy documents, the proliferation of desktop files and spreadsheet systems, and the paucity of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications.
